The I.E. Tamm Theory Department is one of the primary structural units of the P.N. Lebedev Physical Institute of the Russian Academy
of Sciences. The Department's main objective is to conduct fundamental research in the field of theoretical physics.
The Theory Department
was established simultaneously with the Physical Institute of the USSR Academy of Sciences in 1934. From its founding until 1971,
it was headed by Igor E. Tamm.
In 1972, the Theory Department was named after Academician I.E. Tamm. Detailed information regarding the

Currently, the Department employs 78 staff members, including 75 researchers. Among them are 35 Doctors of Sciences (D.Sc.)
and 39 Candidates of Sciences (Ph.D.) in Physics and Mathematics.
Six staff members are members of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS): K.P. Zybin and E.A. Kuznetsov — Full Members (Academicians);
P.I. Arseev, M.A. Vasiliev, M.I. Vysotsky, and V.I. Ritus — Corresponding Members.
K.B. Alkalaev — Professor of the RAS.
The Head of the Department is Academician Kirill P. Zybin.
The Scientific Council of the Department develops the primary research directions, recommends programs and research plans for
approval, evaluates the research outcomes of the Division and its units, reviews scientific reports and presentations,
and addresses other matters concerning scientific activities.
